Michael Smith was educated at Bournemouth School and subsequently read music at Jesus College, Oxford where he was Organ Scholar. He studied the organ with Richard Seal at Salisbury Cathedral and Roger Fisher at Chester Cathedral. He graduated in 1981 with an MA in Music.
In 1982 he became Organist and Choirmaster of Oswestry Parish Church and quickly established an excellent reputation as private music tutor, latterly becoming piano tutor at Bellan House School, Oswestry.
He moved to Bridlington Priory as Organist and Master of the Choristers in 1987. Since then the choir has made three recordings under his direction and given a number of radio broadcasts. The choir completed its fifth concert tour of Bad Salzuflen in Germany last summer. As well as his duties in the Priory he is a private music teacher and piano tutor at Stamford Bridge Primary School near York and at Scarborough College. He has given organ recitals throughout this country and is extensively involved in the work of the RSCM. He was made an Associate of the RSCM in recognition of his work at the Priory.
